What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is when a person experiences a deep relaxation, and they can focus on appropriate suggestions made by the therapist. In a hypnotherapy session the client is always in control and cannot be made to do anything. We cannot make you rob a bank, bark like a dog or murder someone.
Therapists make suggestions to bring about positive changes within the client, empowering them.
Hypnotherapy is not a state of deep sleep, but rather a trance-like condition where the client is in an enhanced state of awareness and concentrating entirely on the hypnotherapist’s voice. During hypnosis, the clients breathing becomes slower and deepens, the pulse rate also drops. Awareness of unpleasant symptoms such as nausea and the sensation of pain are alleviated.
How does it work?
Hypnotherapists bypass the conscious mind and access the subconscious. This is done by overloading the critical thought process. This triggers the more instinctive subconscious to awaken.
Can’t I just use positive thinking?
No. Positive thinking is fine and can make us feel good, but useless by itself.
It is only by accessing the subconscious mind that changes can be made. Positive thinking by its self cannot do this.
What problems can be treated by hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy can be applied to almost anything. It can be used to relive pain in surgery and dentistry. During labour, it can help to shorten the delivery stage and reduce the need for pain killers. It can also be used to help with pain relief in those with terminal illnesses. It has been shown to help people overcome addicitions such as smoking, alcoholism and gambling. Children are quite easy to hypnotise and can be helped with bruxism, enuresis and self confidence. Teenagers can conquer stammering or have help with studying.
Phobias also lend themselves well to hypnotherapy. Panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive behaviour and insomnia also benefit. Conditions exacerbated by tension such as irritable bowel, psoriasis and eczema can also be treated.
Many well known celebrities have sought hypnotherapy to help a variety of issues. Among them, Tiger Woods - golf, Orlando Bloom - chocolate, Kevin Costner - sea sickness, Aaron Eckhart - drug and alcohol addiction, Matt Damon, Drew Barrymore and Ellen DeGeneres all used it for smoking, Jackie Kennedy-Onasis - to help her let go of tragic events in her life.
